I have two small book reviews that I wanted to talk about.
Both of these books take place in a modern faery world.
The first one is Tithe by Holly Black. The main character is sixteen-year-old Kaye. Kaye meets a mysterious boy in the woods as she is walking home, and the rest goes from there.
Since this book is written by Holly Black, I wasn't expecting it to be as graphic as it was. This is definitely not a children's book. There's cursing, under age drinking and smoking, partying, and all of that.
This book was really quick to read, because everything happened so quickly. I mean, really quickly. I was hoping that the next books would continue on with the story, but they don't.
So this book got a 3 out of 5 stars from me.
The last one is The Iron King by Julie Kagawa.
I really enjoyed this one. I put off reading it because of all of the mixed reviews, but I'm really glad I read it.
This story is about Meghan Chase who goes into the faery kingdom in search of her brother.
There, she meets a lot of characters and creatures.
So, I didn't know if it was just me, or did this book seem really similar to Jim Henson's film The Labyrinth?
I have seen The Labyrinth so many times, that I know all the lines. So many times that I wish David Bowie, or the Goblin King, would come for me.
A lot of things that happened in The Labyrinth, happened in The Iron King.
I was so shocked that I had to see if there were others who thought the same way. And yes, quite a few people were also confused as of to why the were almost the same story.
Either way, I really enjoyed The Iron King and I will be buying the rest of the books.
The Iron King got 4 out of 5 stars from me.
If you enjoy modern faery tales with creepy, evil faeries, then I recommend Tithe by Holly Black. And if you enjoy The Labyrinth, and want a story similar to it, but has some slight romance and more of a modern story, then I definitely recommend The Iron King by Julie Kagawa.
