Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli Review!

Title: Stargirl
Author: Jerry Spinelli
Mass Market Paperback: 208 pages
Publisher: Laurel Leaf; Reissue edition (May 11, 2004)

Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of “Stargirl, Stargirl.” She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first.
Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love.

There's a Stargirl in all of us. Some of us are proud to embrace it, and some of us are more subtle about it.
I related a lot to this book. I don't like to talk about myself, but there was a lot of things in this book that reminded me of my past. I was a Stargirl. Maybe not as bright and cheerful as the Stargirl of this book, but just in a way where I didn't care what people thought of me. This did, however, make me become "shunned" the way Stargirl did.

Stargirl is a story told from Leo Burlock. Leo is in high school, and he is what everyone else is: normal. Everyone does the same thing, dresses the same way, and no one really stands out. Then Stargirl arrives. Stargirl is new to the school, and she isn't afraid to show who she really is.

I applaud Leo for being brave enough to talk to Stargirl. Or stalk her. Whichever one works. >w< Leo is fascinated with Stargirl and she shows him things that he would have never paid attention to, if it weren't for her.
Stargirl is someone I would want for a friend. She's us in a way. That person that we keep locked up inside ourselves as we put up a front in front of other people. Why? Because we're all afraid to be judged.

I loved the relationship between Stargirl and Leo. That is until he becomes tired of being shunned. Leo has Stargirl become normal, and I was kind of upset when he was happy about it. I highly believe in accepting people the way that they are. But that's what Stargirl becomes, normal. And sadly, it doesn't help Stargirl.

The ending to me was kind of unexpected. I was so sad to see the years go by and I was sad that Stargirl was gone. I wish Leo could've realized sooner how amazing Stargirl was, and not see it when it was too late.

I do recommend this book to anyone who wants something cute and quick to read. This book got a 3 out 5 stars from me.
