The one and only Ivan is based on a true story of a silver back gorilla.
The story starts off by introducing us to Ivan, a silver back gorilla who lives and works in a mall.
There are other animals too; Stella the elephant and Bob the homeless dog.
These two characters are Ivan's best friends.
The treatment these animals endured in this mall was bad. Stella had a wounded foot that hardly got treated and Ivan lived in a small square domain.
I really loved this story about Ivan and everyone who lived/worked in the mall.
My favorite had to be Julia.
Julia loves to paint and she loves all of the animals in the zoo. Her favorite being Ivan.
She shows Ivan how to draw and paint, which starts to sell for money at the mall gift shop. Julia's character was just such a joy to read about.
Next is Stella. I loved Stella so much and was almost in tears when something happened.
But before that, we are introduced to Ruby. A new baby elephant that was brought to the mall. She and Stella become close very quickly.
Bob, the homeless dog, was such a funny character. He has such a personality that you can't help but love him.
Throughout the story, we learn how Ivan was captured from his home, what painting does to him, and a promise he made with Stella.
If you love animal stories, you will love The One And Only Ivan.
It may seem like just a middle grade book, but it is so much more than that.
The ending by the way was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect ending.
